Ever since they gave her a new cyborg body and a steady stream of murderous work, she’s known the rules. Keep your head down, do your job, don’t get involved. Then they sent her to assassinate a child. Instead, she took him out of the City and into the Waste. Of course they’ll be coming for her, and for the strange, quiet, thirsty boy she’s rescued. Because he’s not just a child — he’s a profitable experiment. Bounty hunters. Fellow cyborgs. Cannibals. Monsters. They're all after him. All she has on her side is an almost-invulnerable body, a lifetime’s worth of stubbornness, and the willingness to kill whoever she has to. It’s going to have to be enough.

She Wolf and Cub Lilith Saintcrow Books

This story caught me completely by surprise.

I've read Ms. Saintcrow's work in the past (the Dante Valentine series). I enjoyed that series, but not enough to seek out more. Those novels were well written, mostly formulaic, more than a little melodramatic, but with flashes of creativity. I was bored and looking around for something to read, so I picked this story up, thinking that I knew what kind of story I was getting.

This story is not those stories.

This story is graphically, intensely, unapologetically, fiercely passionate. There is violence here and gore, but not a single bit of it feels gratuitous or melodramatic. There is vividly coloured and dense world building that gives no quarter for the reader who can't keep up. There is an almost claustrophobic faithfulness to the main character's struggles and loyalties. There were obvious opportunities to reach for the easy and cliched plot points. Ms. Saintcrow blew past them with so much force on the way to her own unexpected plot twists that I hardly noticed them.

I'm impressed. And I will be reading much more of her work in the future.

She Wolf and Cub Lilith Saintcrow Books Reviews

The heroine of this story is compelling, a child , a special child ,awakens the maternal instinct in her , and she becomes the fierce mother wolf protector. Her journey to reclaiming her humanity through attachment to the child , was fascinating !
What an amazing ride into this authors take on a dystopian future. Gene tinkering, cybertronics, legit cyborgs, and everything in between. The main character felt real and layered. Honestly, is she in the market for more kids? Because I could always use a kickass mom like that! Loved the setup for a sequel and I will be buying it when it comes out.
Wow! What an imaginative world building, I want to drive back into it. This was my first book by this author and I really enjoyed it
This is an entirely different universe where people are enhanced, just to live half normal lives. When a liquidator meets her mark, an year old boy, they immediately have a connection. She risks everything to save him. Sam, her Handler, is also a surprise. He will go to extraordinary means to help save her and the boy. A must be read.
I really liked how original the plot was. I mean, it followed the typical ideas- a woman feeling a maternal instinct, fighting bad people to protect child, etc.

I mostly enjoyed the confusing intensity of the story. You often have little to no idea what is going on in the story. Each answer only led to new questions. That can be annoying, but in this case, I am more than willing to read more of this story. You get so caught up in this world so utterly different, but subtly similar to our own.

The characters also have a uniqueness of their own- they are all so strange. They are not completely good or evil they are merely beings operating on their morals. Fascinating!

I would definitely recommend this to most everyone. Just beware some language and fairly graphic descriptions of fight scenes.
This story is tough and intense - and it drew me in and squeezed, until I finished reading at zero-dark thirty in the morning. There are teases and action and misdirection and heads popped off necks (not always a permanent death by the way). The She-wolf is fiercely practical until she finds her cub, and then all bets are off. I would read more about her, or about this world.
3.5 stars. The story is well written with very interesting dystopian/cyberpunk world building but what we learn about the world was unevenly distributed, even accounting for the incomplete knowledge that comes with a first person point of view. There were lots of details about bodily systems ("implementation") from Abby/Jess but there was just too much going on outside of her to really get a handle on who the other characters are or how they got where they are, let alone all the players (corporations and others). It felt like a novella in an already established world. Never the less, I want to know what happens next and will read a sequel if there is one. I hope this is just the beginning of the story because I have many unanswered questions.
